• From route 66 take Exit 40 (Haymarket) to go south on route 15
• Turn right at light just south of 66 to go west on route 55
• Drive about .8 miles and turn right (north) on Antioch Road/VA route 681 (no light, no stop sign)
• Drive about 3.2 miles on Antioch until it dead-ends on Waterfall Road/VA route 629 and turn left (west)
• Road name changes to Hopewell Rd when it crosses into Fauquier County... drive past Mountain Road…
• Turn right (north, a diagonal turn) onto Bull Run Mountain Road, which soon turns to a graveled climb
• Drive about .9 miles and watch for 2 gates on either side of the road – ignore the large, well-made, locked stone/metal gate on the left (FAA radar facility) and take the sharp right uphill through the much simpler open, rusty-metal-orange gate on the right (south). Gate consists of a single long bar followed by another similar open gate.
• Continue uphill on unmarked & poorly paved road, paying special attention to your car's undercarriage and suspension.
• After about .3 miles the road ascends and turns left around a small but massive rocky cliff. You will see a concrete building attached to a radio tower, and a small parking lot for weeny cars that can't make it the rest of the way to the Observatory.
• Take a sharp RIGHT in front of the concrete building and follow a not-very-clearly-marked dirt road that goes about 1/3 of the way around the fences protecting the radio tower
• Then make a right onto a dirt road through some trees and brush and look for the Operations Building (steep-roofed 2-story concrete block building) and 40 yards past that, the Observatory itself.
